Walking Right Down the Middle of Main Street U.S.A.

Walking Right Down the Middle of Main Street U.S.A.

The First Counter Kingdom Companion

The Counter Kingdom is officially out in the world.

But I’ve never wanted this album to exist as nothing more than a collection of covers.

Every song we chose came from somewhere.

There’s history behind them. There are memories attached to them. There are attractions, places and moments that give those melodies meaning long before we ever get our hands on them and reinterpret them through Leal Legacy Music.

So I figured…

Why not talk about them?

Welcome to the first The Counter Kingdom Companion episode of The Leal Legacy Podcast.

And we’re starting exactly where a trip to the Magic Kingdom should:

Main Street U.S.A.

The idea for this episode actually happened pretty casually.

I went looking for more information about “Walking Right Down the Middle of Main Street U.S.A.”

I expected to fall into some enormous Disney-history rabbit hole.

Instead, I discovered that there wasn’t an overwhelming amount of backstory surrounding the song itself.

And weirdly enough, that made me want to record the episode even more.

Because maybe the interesting part isn’t only the history of the song.

Maybe it’s why a song like this matters at all.

More Than a Street

Main Street U.S.A. is one of those pieces of a Disney park that can be incredibly easy to overlook.

There isn’t a massive thrill ride waiting for you.

There isn’t some enormous technological achievement demanding your attention.

It’s a street.

But it’s also your introduction.

You walk underneath the train station, emerge on the other side and suddenly the outside world starts disappearing behind you.

The music changes.

The architecture changes.

The smells change.

You look ahead and see the castle waiting at the opposite end.

Main Street is doing an enormous amount of storytelling before you’ve ever stepped onto an attraction.

And “Walking Right Down the Middle of Main Street U.S.A.” somehow captures that feeling with an almost ridiculous simplicity.

It’s happy.

It’s earnest.

It’s nostalgic for a version of America that feels somewhere between history and imagination.

And when you hear it in the right environment, it just feels like Disney.

Going Down the Rabbit Hole

So that’s where this episode goes.

I spend some time digging into the song itself, sharing some of the history and trivia I was able to find, but I also let the conversation wander into my own thoughts about Main Street U.S.A.

Why does it work?

Why does it matter?

Why can walking down one relatively small stretch of themed pavement become such an important part of the ritual of visiting the Magic Kingdom?

That’s the fun of these companion episodes.

They don’t need to be lectures.

They’re an excuse to explore the worlds surrounding these songs.

The history matters.

The trivia is fun.

But so does the feeling.

And Then We Play It

There was one other thing I knew I wanted these companion episodes to do.

After we’ve talked about the original song, explored its world and figured out why we cared enough about it to include it on The Counter Kingdom…

I want you to hear our version.

So the final chapter of this episode isn’t another story.

It’s the music.

The episode closes with the Leal Legacy Music / The Counter Kingdom cover of “Walking Right Down the Middle of Main Street U.S.A.”

And that’s the format I think could make this series something really special.

The story.
The history.
The memories.
Our perspective.
And finally, our music.

One song down.

Nine more doors into The Counter Kingdom waiting to be opened.

And there couldn’t have been a better place to begin than right down the middle of Main Street U.S.A.
