The Counter Kingdom Halloween: Trick or Treat (For Halloween)

Every Halloween parade eventually leads somewhere.

After “Boo To You” kicked open the gates to Midnight Amusements with distorted guitars, screams, gang vocals, and post-hardcore chaos, we wanted the second half of The Counter Kingdom Halloween to feel completely different.

So we grabbed our candy buckets and went trick-or-treating.

“Trick or Treat (For Halloween)” takes the classic song from Disney’s 1952 animated short Trick or Treat and sends it through another corner of the Leal Legacy Music sound vintage doo-wop.

Instead of trying to match the energy of “Boo To You,” we leaned into everything that makes old Halloween music so much fun: warm vocal harmonies, playful rhythms, vintage sweetness, and just enough spooky mischief around the edges.

The result feels less like a modern cover and more like an old Halloween 45 we somehow pulled out of a dusty record crate.

And that became the entire idea behind The Counter Kingdom Halloween.

These two songs were never supposed to sound alike.

“Boo To You” is loud, aggressive, theatrical, and chaotic.

“Trick or Treat (For Halloween)” is warm, nostalgic, playful, and sweet.

Yet somehow they belong on opposite sides of the exact same strange little record.

That contrast also helped expand the world of Midnight Amusements.

If “Boo To You” showed us the wild Halloween procession marching through the amusement park, “Trick or Treat (For Halloween)” takes us beyond the midway and into the neighborhood after dark. Porch lights glow. Autumn leaves tumble across the sidewalk. Jack-o’-lanterns grin from front steps while ghosts, skeletons, witches, and other rubber-hose weirdos make their rounds looking for something sweet.

It’s the softer side of Midnight Amusements.

Still strange.

Still mischievous.

Just with more candy.

And with that, our little seasonal detour is complete.

The Counter Kingdom Halloween wasn’t planned as another album or some massive new Leal Legacy Music project. It started with a spontaneous idea to turn one Halloween parade song into post-hardcore, followed wherever the fun took us, and eventually became a two-song Halloween record with an imaginative world all its own.

That feels appropriate.

Halloween should be fun.

It should be weird.

It should make you feel like a kid again.

So until the gates open again next October, there’s only one thing left to say:

Trick or treat.

Welcome to Midnight Amusements.
